More buzzer-beating goals at Colquitt soccer in home sweep

MOULTRIE – When Packer soccer first played “Beat the Clock” it did so with 31.5 seconds left. Then, they did it with just over nine seconds to go. Finally, the program had a true buzzer-beater.
Since the last time Colquitt County High teams were in action was last Friday, and the story of the night was Raymon Garcia’s game-winning goal in the second overtime to beat Tift County 1-0, these other two instances have yet to be reported until now. It’s because they happened Tuesday in a non-region girls-boys doubleheader against the Ware County Gators.
There wasn’t much drama behind the buzzer-beater, for it was part of a five-goal first-half outburst by Jimbo Jarvis’ Packers.
Chloe Gould, however, for the Lady Packers matched the excitement Garcia brought to the home turf. Her goal, at 9.4 seconds of the second half, broke a 1-1 tie and gave Colquitt County’s girls a 2-1 win over the Lady Gators. It was only the second win in the last six matches for the Lady Packers and coach Trey Jones.
This was a goal even the Ware County coach saw coming on an ill-advised play by his goalkeeper in the final minute. Colquitt County was awarded a free kick within 25 yards of the goal, the foul drawn on the work by Reagan Young and Danielle Brown. Time was stopped as officials made sure the ‘wall’ was set up at the right distance. Ragan Harden took that free kick, at around the 39 second mark, but it sailed high.
With the clock moving, Ware County was also to set up for the goal kick, which the Lady Gator coach would definitely agree was rushed. Gould won that 50-50 ball and had no resistance to charge and score the game-winner.
Gould indeed had perhaps the clearest look for a Lady Packer all match long Tuesday. The first half was a frustrating time for the Colquitt team, especially considering the efforts of Leena Viruet, Young, Branda Velasquez, Chloe Sumner, Gould, Daliza Gachuz and Brown.
Giving Jones a solid game at the sweeper area was Joy Del Angel, who broke up Ware’s first free kick in the opening minute. She also did a job on the attacking Ware striker so that goalkeeper Julia Warnock could wait and time her stopping play four minutes in.
Ware County’s tendency in the half was to send the ball ahead into open space on its offensive end. One such loose ball on the left side was kicked to the back of the net at 30:41.
Down 1-0, the Lady Packers’ best chances in the half were on the set free kicks. Harden took one of 25 yards (27:16) where the visiting keeper made a leaping catch. Colquitt also crossed in a pass from a corner, but it was caught at 25:50.
Hannah Goodno played Ware’s corner kicks well, and Harden disrupted a fast-break at 10:15. Del Angel got the better of another 1-on-1 rush with under five minutes until halftime. Harden, in the next minute, caught up with another sprinter up field, and later she found the ball amid the crowd of players to run the other way off a Lady Gator corner.
The second half saw the Lady Packers immediately take a more aggressive approach on offense. Midfielder Sugeili Gachuz had a key part in maintaining possessions. Sumner made a quick attempt on goal that was cleared away, and she claimed a goal kick. Harden as involved as well, giving Gould that same kind of open lead, though Ware was able to break that up in the first 10 minutes.
But Harden knew how to stop the Lady Gators on the run, even if it meant giving the Waycross visitors a corner kick. Del Angel got the ball out of the box, and the ball switched ends for Colquitt to find the leveling goal.
Velasquez hit a ball off the right post, but Ware knocked it out for a corner. In the scramble for the ball, Velasquez tried again and made it count at 29:30.
On the ensuing kickoff, Warnock had to meet the Ware offense to force a wide shot.
Jami Kling, about 10 minutes later, sent the ball towards Brown and Velasquez for an attack and a corner. Colquitt maintained the ball for another full minute for Young took a shot saved.
Del Angel came up with another stop on the run, but the Lady Gators did as well when Sumner got the ball to Brown and Gould. Ware stole the ball away as the half moved under 15 minutes.
The Lady Packers forced more corner chances, and Sumner was fouled going for the ball away from the net. This was a Harden 20-yard free kick saved. Del Angel, Young and Goodno made clutch defensive moves in the last 10 minutes to prevent any Ware shots.
• Carlos Linda did the buzzer-beating for Colquitt County’s boys when they had a 4-0 lead on Ware. The other story in this match was the four goals by Garcia along with his two assists as the Packers dominated the Gators 10-0.
Garcia and Juan Pascual did a quick push in the first minute Ware County saved, and in the second minute Eric Leon led Abrahm Sanchez for a header also saved. So then it took to 34:30 for the Packers to break through, and it was Leon’s pass to the middle, where Ruben Gonzalez and Garcia moved it to-and-fro with Gonzalez scoring.
The passing combinations continued, Gonzalez getting to a corner and crossing the ball to Garcia. That shot was saved (ninth minute). At 26:18, Garcia found Sergio Jimenez on the run, and that ball was saved on the ground. Jose Moreno made a great lead in where Pascual got it and fed Garcia. His first goal came at 22:18.
At 15:06, the Gators changed keepers following a collision in the box. Garcia would score again at 11:49 from Sanchez’ crossing pass (3-0), and 16 seconds later that lead was 4-0 with Landa starting a play from Garcia to Pascual.
Landa’s goal came as the result of a stolen goal kick.
In the second half, Garcia scored back-to-back goals on assists by Jimenez and Pascual.
Blayton Duncan didn’t need to do much as goalkeeper, but Jarvis put him in a field position while substituting in four junior varsity players. Duncan scored and had an assist to Aldo Miranda. Brandon Mendez also scored.
“My JV is strong,” said Jarvis. “We did not lose a beat.”
Up next for Colquitt soccer is Region 1-7A action at home vs. Camden County. For the Packer boys, it’s a chance to avenge a 2-0 loss in Kingsland in February, one that came the weekend after three Colquitt High wins at the Freedom Cup and a Tuesday nail-biter at home, 3-2, vs. Valdosta. Jarvis said the match at Camden featured about 15 to 16 offsides calls, but it was also a time when his club was tired.
The Packers are 1-1 so far in the region (8-2 overall), the win coming over Tift in that overtime match last weekend. Jarvis said that was a case where they got away from their plan and played into Tift’s hands, which was to get through regular play tied and have a shootout.
“It almost worked,” said Jarvis. He said Camden has lost to Lowndes, so the match with the Wildcats looms big. “I think we have a bad taste in our mouths over that loss.”
