DALTON, Ga. — A bond hearing for Dalton High School social studies teacher Randal Davidson, who was arrested after firing a bullet through a classroom window at the school last Wednesday, has been pushed to Friday “at his request,” according to District Attorney Bert Poston.
Davidson waived his first appearance in Magistrate Court on Thursday and was placed on the Superior Court calendar of Chief Judge William T. Boyett for Tuesday. But in an email sent to the Daily Citizen-News on Monday morning, Poston said the bond hearing has been moved to Friday. Boyett is scheduled to preside over the hearing on Friday.
Messages left for Davidson’s attorney, Richard Murray, at his office were not immediately returned on Monday.
Davidson has been in the Whitfield County jail after being charged by the Dalton Police Department with aggravated assault (gun), terroristic threats and acts, carrying a weapon in school safety zones (non-license), reckless conduct, disrupting a public school and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Dalton High was placed on lockdown and evacuated after police said Davidson barred students and administrators from coming into his classroom and fired a bullet through the window. Davidson had been in a planning period before the shooting and no students were in the classroom at the time.
DPD spokesman Bruce Frazier said police recovered a .38-caliber snub-nosed revolver from the scene. He said Davidson brought the gun into the school in a computer case. Davidson surrendered to School Resource Officer Bart Chandler “30 to 45 minutes” after the incident began, according to DHS Principal Steve Bartoo. No one was seriously injured during the incident, but one student did suffer an ankle injury during the evacuation of students and staff.
