MOULTRIE, Ga. — A speeding driver who reportedly was doing more than double the posted speed limit on Saturday morning faces charges from two law enforcement agencies after wrecking his car while trying to outrun police.
A Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s radar indicated that a 2004 Honda Accord was traveling at 116 miles per hour at about 1:57 a.m. near the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Overlook Drive.
When the officer turned around to give chase, the driver turned onto Fifth Avenue Southeast and wrecked in a curve as the car approached First Avenue Southeast.
The driver, identified as Kalib Arthur Smith, was out of the car when the deputy and Moultrie police officers arrived at the scene of the wreck.
The car left the road on the east side of the roadway and the front end struck a ditch, causing it to overturn, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The car came to rest upright.
The GSP charged Smith, 24, 812 Northside Drive, with driving under the influence, failure to drive within single lane, speeding, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.
The sheriff’s office has filed charges of reckless driving and super speeder violation. Smith had an outstanding warrant for his arrest at the time of the accident, police said.
