After two delays, Rally for Reading hopeful for Sunday

TIFTON — After two weeks of Sunday rain, Mike Brumby is practically jumping for joy.

There is only a 20 percent chance of rain this Sunday, he said, and Rally for Reading will finally be held at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s Red Hill Center. The event begins at 1:30 p.m. and is scheduled to run until 4:30 p.m.

The annual “afternoon of fun doubles,” was originally set for Feb. 4. A downpour postponed the event to Feb. 11 and when the rain showed up again that morning, Rally for Reading had to be pushed back again.

This is the fifth annual Rally for Reading, which is presented by the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence (TCFEE) and features ABAC tennis players paired with area individuals who sign up to play.

Rally for Reading this year has the goal of helping to endow the Terri Nalls Reading Angel Chair, which was named the TCFEE’s 17th chair in 2017. Nalls will be on hand at the event, which is looking to be quite the international affair.

Brumby said 18 players from eight countries speaking six languages will be on the courts. ABAC’s rosters include players from France and Brazil and are coached by Englishman Dale White.

Brumby is promising other special guests and the Brumby Tennis Facebook page said gift bags will be available for participants.
