WELLBORN, Fla. — A Wellborn man died in a single-car accident in southeastern Suwannee County on Monday evening.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2018 Ford, driven by 59-year-old Joseph K. Giffen III, ran onto the western shoulder of County Road 137 near 192nd Street at 7:37 p.m. Monday as it was trying to negotiate a right curve on the road.

The vehicle then struck a tree and caught fire, according to the FHP report.

The car was fully engulfed in flames when Suwannee County Fire Rescue units arrived, according to SCFR.

It is not known what caused the driver to travel off the road, but FHP is still investigating the accident.
