Tifton City Council to consider privatizing probation

TIFTON — The Tifton City Council will hold a special called meeting regarding a resolution privatizing probation services and entering into a contract with Professional Court Services, Inc. on Mon. Feb. 5 after its workshop meeting, according to the meeting agenda.

The council will be discussing this resolution at the 5:30 p.m. workshop meeting immediately prior to the special called meeting.

A resolution approving a memorandum of agreement with the Georgia Historic Preservation Commission for the Commerce Way project is also on the agenda for the special called meeting.

John Lowe, chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, will speak to the council about the Commerce Way project HPD agreement at the workshop meeting immediately prior to the special called meeting.

The city manager will give a report addressing the TSPLOST project list for Tifton, panhandling and beggars and Ruth’s Cottage.

Meredith Lipson with Mauldin & Jenkins will give a review of the FY2017 audit.

The council will be reviewing a bid for expanding the parking area at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center at the workshop meeting.

An ordinance requesting a modification to reclassify certain lots from single family to two family dwellings.

The council will also be considering a resolution urging the state legislature for more local control of fireworks, a resolution to transfer assets and administration of the city’s retirement plan to the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System Plan and Trust and a resolution designating the Rhythm and Ribs BBQ Festival a festival according to the festival ordinance passed last year.

This ordinance will allow alcohol sales to take place within the designated area and will allow attendees to walk around within the festival area with beverages.

The council will be reviewing alcohol licenses for The Gin, located at 255 Brumby Way; Save-A-Lot, located at 163 S. Virginia Ave.; The Shell Station, located at 2302 US Highway 41 N; El Patron, located at 451 Fulwood Blvd. and Taco Loco, located at 307 W. 12th Street.
