MOULTRIE, Ga. — Kirk Beacham, junior at Colquitt County High School, was named the State EMC/FFA Agriculture Electrical Wiring winner recently.

Beacham competed at the State FFA Camp in Covington, Ga., on Jan. 13 against 11 other area winners from across the state. He had earned the spot to compete by winning the area contest in November.

He completed a wiring practicum, answered electrical problem solving questions and delivered a six-minute electrical demonstration speech.

This is the third year that Beacham has competed in this event.

This event is sponsored by the Georgia EMC, which awards scholarship money to these students. Beacham has earned $2,000 in scholarship money through this FFA event in the past three years.

“This event is complex, challenging and requires many hours of preparation,” Beacham said. “But in the end it is one of the most practical and rewarding contests that I have competed in. I was really excited to be able to win on the 50th anniversary of this contest. All the time spent in preparation was most definitely worth it in the end.”

His advisor and father, Stacey Beacham, is the ag mechanics teacher at Colquitt County High School.

“It is a proud moment anytime our agriculture and FFA members succeed but this one was very personal,” the elder Beacham said. “He worked really hard to achieve this goal.”
