Busy Bee shooting suspect captured

LAKE CITY, Fla. — The suspect in the Busy Been shooting was captured by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office early Monday morning.
According to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Leonard Otis Cooks Jr., 30, shot his ex-girlfriend twice in the chest with an unknown caliber revolver on Jan. 2.

The woman was life-flighted to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
According to Sheriff Sam St. John, the victim had two surgeries and is now listed in stable condition.
“With the help of Columbia County investigators and the U.S. Marshals Service, we were able to pinpoint the location of the suspect with tips generated from the public,” St. John said.
St. John said the suspect will be transported to the Suwannee County Jail later Monday.
Cooks, who was arrested twice in the span of a week in late November and early December for aggravated battery including holding the victim against her will, kidnapped the woman from her residence earlier in the evening Jan. 2, according to the SCSO.
The woman, who had an active injunction against the suspect, tried to escape from the suspect while at the Busy Bee near the Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 129 junction, SCSO said.

According to the SCSO, the suspect then chased the woman through the parking lot while shooting at her and striking her in the chest.
He fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV according to the SCSO and remained at-large until the early morning hours Monday.
Cooks has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, felon in possession of a firearm and violation of injunction.
