THOMASVILLE — Santa Claus was not the only one bringing holiday cheer this season.
Thomasville High School students, along with help from Scholars Academy students, took part in several Christmas-themed events to give back to the local community.

The first was a Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) Christmas, which was conducted by the city school’s leadership class. THS leadership class students purchased and wrapped gifts.
The event initially sought to provide Christmas gifts from 20 kids’ wishlists.
Janet Cable, THS leadership teacher, said the initial success of this year’s DFCS Christmas allowed the students to provide Christmas joy to 10 additional kids.
“We raised about $1,200 in monetary donations,” she said.
Cable said this was her first year conducting the DFCS Christmas.
“It went really well,” she added.

Student Government Association (SGA) members, also under Cable’s guidance, took part in different festivities aimed at giving back.
Members took part in a slew of events, including a canned goods drive at Second Harvest and volunteering and preparing meals at Rescue Mission.
Approximately 200 cans, Cable said, were collected for the drive at Second Harvest.
SGA members also volunteered at Victorian Christmas, clad in Victorian costumes of the past.
The THS leadership class and SGA, along with the high school’s positive behavior intervention support ambassadors, also participated in a “Shop with a Cop” event.
Twenty-five students assisted Thomasville Police Department lawmen and kept track of expenses, Cable said.
“We had one student for every officer and child pairing,” she added.
Cable said each event was successful and also offered thanks to the Scholars Academy National Honors Society for helping with the events.
