During recent days there have been numerous reports of individuals and groups who have given of their time, talents and money to serve the needy during the holiday season.

These individuals and groups embraced the idea that it truly is better to give than to receive as well as the concept of being “thy brother’s keeper.”

The bottom line: It’s just about good folks doing good things.

Not only does such giving have a direct positive impact on those who are less fortunate, but indirectly these actions serve us all in a sense that we see service rather than rhetoric, and we see genuine caring instead of politics.

No doubt  Democrats, Republicans and Independents were involved. But this was not partisanship, it was about cutting to the chase in addressing needs of our fellowman.

For a moment we are caught up in the sense of that kind of service at a time when our nation is bombarded with the stress and even the nastiness of those in power and those seeking power. It’s a tremendous distraction that helps keep us sane and gives us a chance to review the meaning of service and caring.

These projects have involved a cross-section of our community and include men, women and children. And for most of them, it’s likely that they didn’t care who got credit  for these successes as long as those in need were served. What a concept! If only we could make it infectious in myriad venue.

It’s not exactly a course in political science or social studies, but there is something to be learned from these experiences if we should observe and do a little soul searching.

Applause to all of you who showed such compassion and energy. We are a better community because you care that much.
