CHATSWORTH, Ga. — Hamilton Medical Center recently sponsored a free skin cancer screening at the Murray County Health Department. One-third of those screened had abnormal results and were referred for further care. Local providers Dr. Mary Beth Cole and physician assistant Nikki Dean gave their time to screen the residents. According to Cole, if caught early, skin cancer is very treatable. She said sun protection and skin cancer screenings help reduce the risk of invasive skin cancer. Hamilton Medical Center is in the process of building the Peeples Cancer Institute, a state-of-the-art facility. Some of the plans for the facility include enhanced radiation therapies, including the Varian Truebeam linear accelerator and 4-D CT Simulator; personal guidance for patients through every step of their care; patient and community resource center; boutique for wigs, appearance consultations and personal accessories; healing arts program, including integration of art, music and support therapies; bistro featuring coffee, smoothies, snacks and a comfortable seating area; and a reflection room for quiet contemplation and moments of relaxation.

South Georgia: So much for winter

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Summer’s back. At least for a few days, according to forecasters. After the first true cold snap of the season last week, highs in the mid-to-upper 70s are back under mostly dry skies for the next week, according to meteorologists Brian Edwards of the private forecasting firm AccuWeather and Andy Lahr of the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. A warm front pushed its way north over South Georgia Sunday, bringing warmer, moist air to the area, Lahr said. A high-pressure system over Florida is pushing the wind flow up from the south, Edwards said. Both meteorologists said highs in the Valdosta area should hover in the upper 70s through Wednesday, when a very weak cold front may move through. That front will briefly bump rain chances up to 40 percent; then daytime highs will ease off slightly to the mid-70s for the rest of the week. The highs are 10-15 degrees above the average for this time of year, Lahr said. Overnight lows will be in the low 60s through Wednesday and remain in the 50s for the rest of the week, according to the weather service’s forecast. Neither forecaster expected much of a problem with severe weather, though Lahr said it couldn’t be entirely ruled out Wednesday.
