MOULTRIE — Snow and ice caused the Georgia High School Association to postpone the final six state championship games scheduled to be played Friday and Saturday at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, including the Colquitt County-North Gwinnett Class 7A game.
That game has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at North Gwinnett.
The game was scheduled to have been played at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Colquitt County-Noth Gwinnett and the Blessed Trinity-Marist games were called off Saturday morning.
Only two of the four scheduled games on Friday were played.
The GHSA cited safety concerns after the winter storm hit Atlanta on Friday.
Colquitt County athletic director Greg Tillery said that fans who bought tickets can use those them to get into the game next Friday.
Tillery also said there will be no tickets sold at the high school for Friday’s game. Plenty of tickets will be available at the stadium, he said.
As of late Saturday afternoon, there was no word on whether Georgia Public Broadcasting would televise any of the games.
According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the GHSA considered several neutral sites for the six state championship game remaining to be played.
Apparently McEachern High School and Georgia State Stadium were considered, before GHSA decided to hold the championship games at school sites.
The GHSA ruled that the higher-seeded teams earned the right to play host to the games.
Coin flips were used to determine home sites among equally seeded teams, with Warner Robins and Rabun County winning the coin flips.
As of late Saturday, the championship schedule is:
• Class 7A: Colquitt County at North Gwinnett, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Class 6A: Coffee at Lee County, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Class 5A: Rome at Warner Robins, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Class 4A: Blessed Trinity at Marist, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Class AA, Hapeville Charter at Rabun County, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Class A Public, Clinch County at Irwin County, date and time to be determined.
