DALTON, Ga. — Area residents may not have to wait long to find out what will fill the space currently occupied by the Kmart on West Walnut Avenue.

Officials with Sears Holdings, which owns Kmart, confirmed earlier this week the store will close in March. On Thursday, in a post on its Facebook page, Coldwell Banker Kinard Realty said it has been working with a developer for a re-development plan for the 10-acre site.

Coldwell Banker Kinard Realty President Mike Maret said the company worked on the deal for about two and a half years and actually closed on Nov. 15. Maret said he could not discuss the details of the deal or who the developer is but said an announcement of the new retailers should come in a few weeks.

“We are excited about this development and its prospects for Dalton,” Maret said.

The Facebook post says “Our staff had pledged to keep the status of this pending transaction on a confidential basis until Sears Holdings made the announcement to the employees at this store which was apparently disclosed this week,” according to the post.

The Kmart, which is at 1308 W. Walnut Ave., joins the Glenwood Avenue Kmart in closing. They are among more than 45 stores the company this fall announced would close. The Glenwood Avenue Kmart will close in January.

The company closed the Sears store in Walnut Square Mall in September.

“This is not an effort solely aimed at cost savings but is part of a strategy we have been executing against as many of our larger stores are too big for our needs,” Sears Holdings spokesman Howard Riefs said Wednesday. “Having fewer stores — and the right format — will help us bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world.”
