Georgia Department of Public Health encourages flu vaccination
TIFTON, Ga. – National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is Dec. 3-9, and the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) encourages all Georgians 6 months of age and older to get a yearly flu vaccine.
The flu shot takes two weeks to provide protection, so take this time to stop by your local public health department to get your flu vaccine. With flu season beginning as early as August and sometimes lasting until May, it is never too late to vaccinate. The vaccination is available in the shot form. CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the “nasal spray” flu vaccine, should not be used during the 2017-2018 flu season. For more information on immunization, visit: http://dph.georgia.gov/influenza-what-you-need-know.
Two to be honored at college reception
DALTON, Ga. — A reception on Tuesday in Dalton State College’s Westcott Administration Building recognizes two individuals with unique connections to the college. The reception is from 5 to 6 p.m. The public is invited. Dalton businessman and philanthropist Ken White has been on the Dalton State Foundation Board of Trustees for many years. His service as a trustee has included terms as chairman and vice chairman of the board, terms on the executive committee and he currently is on the investment committee, which he has also chaired. White has given generously for need-based and merit-based scholarships for athletics, and for various other initiatives, and now he has made a major gift in support of a long-dreamt-of project: a student health center on campus. In recognition of his commitment to the student health center, college officials will announce the naming of the Ken White Student Health Center at the reception. Former DSC President John Schwenn served the institution from March 2008 through December 2014, and his administration saw many changes across campus as the college opened its first parking garage, relaunched intercollegiate athletics and introduced on-campus student housing. In recognition of his contributions to the college, officials will unveil his official presidential portrait at the reception.
