TIFTON — The 2017 Tift Duals are in the bag and Blue Devils wrestling coach Shawn Watson is happy with the results.
“We wrestled well,” Watson said. “I was pleased.”
Lee County won the tournament, defeating Colquitt County in the finals. Tift went 3-1 for the day, with Lee as the sole loss.
“It played out how I thought,” he said.
Seven schools participated at the duals, with the Tift team divided into two squads. The Blue Devils won three times despite a thin roster, a result of having two teams and of not having everyone back from football season. Watson also said his crew was a younger one.
“We’re still getting the pieces of the puzzle together,” he said. They may not do quite as well as last year’s, which qualified 11 wrestlers for the individual state tournament, but in “a year or two,” he believes he will have a very strong team.
Among those who did well at Saturday’s Tift duals are Bronson Lott, Cody Waldschlager, Gerald Coney and Seth Spillers.
Spillers and Coney won all of their matches at the duals, said Watson. Lott is “having a great year,” with only a single loss. Waldschlager has been against some of the state’s toughest.
Coney, one of the youth of the team, is one of the brightest stars, for Tift County.
“Gerald has a lot of ability,” said Watson. “He works hard.”
Watson expects his roster to fill out soon.
Football players who should enter the lineup include Rod Redding at 170 pounds and Ricky Perry, a heavyweight.
The remainder of Tift’s December schedule sees them at Cook High Saturday for the Hornet Duals. They will be at Berkmar High for Gorilla Warfare Lilburn Dec. 16, the Kyle Maynard Duals at Collins Hilll High Dec. 23 and the Packer Classic in Moultrie Dec. 30.
