- Ricardo Cruz makes a move to get by two defenders. Cruz helped Suwannee get back in Tuesday’s game with a goal in the first half, but the Bulldogs fell short against the Wolverines.
LIVE OAK, Fla. — The Suwannee High boys soccer team opened district play Tuesday and, as expected, played a physical contest against Westside.
In a game filled with trash talk and intensity, Westside used two goals from Elvis Gomez to achieve a 2-1 win.
Gomez scored the go-ahead goal at the start of the second half which proved to be the game-winner.
“They capitalized on two great chances. We had several balls in the final third that we couldn’t put a touch on or a head on,” said Suwannee coach Chris Joyner.
“They’re very fast, very physical. They played a 3-5-1 and made it very difficult for us.”
Gomez put Westside (2-1) ahead in the 10th minute after some miscommunication by the SHS defense led to a wide open net and the game’s first goal.
But Suwannee (1-2-1) was able to bounce back and even the score in the 36th minute on a Ricardo Cruz goal. After a few shots on goal off of a corner kick, Cruz found the back of the net off a rebound.
Suwannee’s best opportunity in the second half came on a well-placed cross from Omar Gonzalez to Alex Rang. But Rang’s sliding kick attempt came up just right of the goal, grazing the post.
