MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Colquitt County man’s horse came out the worse in a collision with a car, but the vehicle, whose driver fled the scene after the Friday night mishap, probably suffered some major damage.
Juan Torress-Mendiola, 24, was riding his horse on Highway 33 at about 7:20 p.m. on Friday when a car struck the animal from behind, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The car, which a witness thought could be a Kia Soul, was traveling north at the time.
Torress-Mendiola was thrown from his mount, and both he and the horse ended up on the right side of the roadway.
The witness told police that the driver stopped a short distance down the road, but then drove away. The witness was not able to tell whether the rider was acting in a reckless manner or darted in front of the car.
The horse was killed, the GSP said. Torress-Mendiola was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
A hospital spokeswoman on Wednesday said that there was no record of a patient with that name being seen on Friday.
