Angel Tree to be set up at Mayo Thriftway

MAYO, Fla. — The season of giving has started in Mayo. The Lafayette Angel Tree will be set up at Mayo Thriftway on Sunday, Nov. 19.

The angels on the tree have a list of gifts for children who are outpatients at Shands Children’s Hospital.  For those wanting to give, pick an angel off the tree, purchase the gifts on the angel and bring back to Mayo Thriftway with the angel attached. Organizer Gloria Johnson said money can be donated to purchase gifts as well.  She suggests the person choose an angel and place the money and angel in a sealed envelop to an employee of Mayo Thriftway. The gifts or donations must be turned in by Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Quota bring Santa

VALDOSTA — Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa Claus will be at the Valdosta Church of the Nazarene, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Dec. 9, to accept wishes and take photos during “A Children’s Christmas Celebration” thanks to Quota International of Valdosta.  Though the entry fee is $12 per child for the second annual celebration, the visit and photo opportunity with Santa Claus is at no additional charge. Adults admission is free. Aside from spending time with Santa, guests can make reindeer food and crafts, have milk and cookies, get creative at the coloring station, watch a film and learn about the live nativity scene. The story time books that will be read are “The Christmas Story” and “The Night Before Christmas,” and goodie bags will be provided to each child in attendance. Tickets are available at First State Bank and Trust Company, 3650 Inner Perimeter Road, Brooker Insurance, 1808 Jerry Jones Drive, and The Image Salon, 1900 Gornto Road. They also can be purchased from any member of Quota. Megan’s House, a children’s respite home under the Easter Seals umbrella, will benefit from the proceeds from the event. Quota will also donate proceeds to other local charities. “They are in need of a handicapped play set and we’re hoping that we can raise enough funds to assist them with this handicapped play set,” said Maureen Collins, president of Quota. Collins said the event will show children both sides of the holiday. “We certainly have the religious aspect; we have the nativity scene with Mary and Joseph, but then we also have the fun aspect of Christmas. We have Santa, and we have ‘The Night Before Christmas,’” she said. Eileen Trantham, advertising member of Quota, agreed, saying the event will both inform and entertain. “We’re giving them the meaning of Christmas, and we feel that helps them understand what it’s all about, and at the same time, they are having a good time,” she said. Quota is a nonprofit organization that is on a mission to help all people in the community, including those who are deaf, speech-impaired and hard-of-hearing. Call (229) 245-5515, or email quotainternationalincvaldosta@gmail.com, for more information about the celebration. To learn more about the organization, visit quotavaldosta.org.
