The Thomas County School Board voted unanimously to relieve Shaver of his football head coaching duties at its meeting on Tuesday night.

Shaver compiled a 74-40 record at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. Central won two outright region championships under his watch in 2009 and 2016.

He had been a part of the school’s football program since 1994, when he joined then-head coach Ed Pilcher’s staff as an assistant.

“I would like to thank Bill Shaver for his 10 years of service as head football coach at Thomas County Central High School, and for his 14 years of service as an assistant coach before that,” Thomas County School Superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay said in a statement. “He remains a valued member of our faculty and a fine role model for our students.”

Shaver will continue to be employed by the school as a full-time math teacher, effective during the second semester of the 2017-18 school year.

The school district will begin an immediate search for a new head coach, with the goal of having one in place by Feb. 1.
