This Shaw Industries plant on Abutment Road has shut down after a worker died at the facility Monday night.

DALTON, Ga. — Shaw Industries shut down its Abutment Road Plant 23 after a worker died at the facility Monday night.

Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier confirmed 51-year-old Jesus Pimentel died after he “apparently got caught in a piece of machinery” at the plant. Frazier said the police department is not investigating the death, which occurred around 9 p.m.

“It’s an accidental death,” Frazier wrote in an email Tuesday morning.

Whitfield County Coroner Greg Bates said Pimentel’s body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy. He said Pimentel died after getting caught between a moving part of the machine and a stationary steel I-beam. Bates said Pimentel was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I suspect the official cause of death will be blunt-force trauma to the head,” Bates said. “From what we were told, he was apparently trying to get a piece of carpet or something out of the machine and another worker threw him a piece of rope and when he bent over to get the rope, that was when he got caught in the machine.”

Bates said Pimentel leaves behind a wife and a daughter.

In an emailed statement, Shaw Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications Susan Farris said the company is investigating the incident.

“There is nothing more important to Shaw than the health and safety of every associate and we are investigating this incident,” Farris said. “The plant will be temporarily shut down during this time. Our thoughts are with the associate’s family during this difficult time.”

A message left for Farris was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Michael D’Aquino with the U.S. Department of Labor said he did not know if an investigation has been launched by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The plant is expected to reopen with first shift on Wednesday.
