DALTON, Ga. — It didn’t take long for former Sauk Valley Community College teammates Isaiah Box and Sean Chisolm to return to their old ways in Dalton State College’s 94-76 season-opening home win over Carver College on Monday.

In the Roadrunners’ first game of the season, the duo wreaked havoc on both ends of the floor.

“It’s unbelievable, I don’t know what to say,” Roadrunner coach Tony Ingle said. “People should want to pay on the way out, too. Pay to get in, see the show and then pay again.”

The two played for Sauk Valley in Dixon, Ill., during the 2015-16 season, Box’s sophomore season. Chisolm was a freshman. They went 21-6 that season and have now reunited in Dalton looking to continue their past success.

Box, a senior guard for Dalton State, controlled the first half defensively with six steals. Some he took straight to the basket himself for points. Others he tossed through his legs or over his shoulder to teammates for assists.

Midway through the first half, Box popped the ball loose at half-court and simultaneously flipped it through his legs like an NFL center to Chisolm. Though the pass was spot on, Chisolm, who made his Dalton State debut Monday, couldn’t convert the highlight play.

“I had a feeling if he was gonna dunk it, he was gonna miss,” joked Box, who finished with 18 points and eight assists.

Though Chisolm missed that particular finish, the 6-foot-4 sophomore forward didn’t miss much else on his way to 38 points, including 21 of Dalton State’s 51 first half points.

“He had a heck of a game tonight,” Box said. “Me and Sean feel like we play really good with each other. I was just trying to feed him the ball and we just got hot and when someone gets hot, you gotta keep feeding him.”

Chisolm scored on dunks, floaters and jumpshots. No matter how battered he got from the defense, he was able to find ways to score.

A rebound shy of a double-double in only his first game with the Roadrunners, Ingle said it’s hard to dissect Chisolm’s play so early, but so far he likes what he sees.

“Sean was sensational, too,” Ingle said. “I’m still trying to figure him out. That’s his first game and I want to see him play more. You gotta have a good inside-outside game. This was the type of game where you had guys like Sean shooting inside and then guys shooting outside.”

Something the Roadrunners didn’t like was the amount of turnovers committed, which allowed Carver to hang around in a game that was heading toward a blowout early on.

With four minutes remaining in the half, Dalton State boasted a commanding 40-14 lead. But a litany of turnovers committed on a string of possessions led to a 17-7 run by Carver.

However, every time Carver made a run, the Roadrunners answered with one of their own.

With the score reaching its closest mark of the second half with Dalton State holding a an eight-point lead with nine minutes to play, the Roadrunners began to seize opportunity, pulling away for an 18-point win.

The Roadrunners got the first game jitters out of the way and embark on their new season. With the College of Coastal Carolina playing at Mashburn Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m., the Roadrunners hope to hone their chemistry and minimize mistakes.

“It’s good,” Box said. “We got a lot of new guys on the team. One of the reasons we got eliminated last year in the Elite Eight was turnovers, so we need to eliminate them. As time goes on, we’ll keep practicing. We just gotta put it behind us. We’ll be fine.”
