- Moultrie Scene Winter 2017
Sgt. Dave Underwood of the Moultrie Police Department serves a unique role in the Colquitt County community. He’s a police officer and a preacher. “You can take the preacher out of the pulpit, but you can’t take the preaching out of the preacher,” he says. On top of that, he’s also an author, having just published his second book about law enforcement.
In this issue of Moultrie Scene magazine, staff writer Alan Mauldin talks to Underwood about his book titled “I Always Wanted to Be a Cop, and Then I Became One.”
Underwood is just one of many friends and neighbors in our community who have stories to tell.
Very similar to Underwood’s story comes the Rev. Jim Houseal who battled our nation’s enemies in Korea and Vietnam. And for many years, he has fought the Devil as a Methodist minister. Rev. Houseal, at 87, plans to retire from the pulpit next June.
Join us in this edition of Moultrie Scene as Rev. Houseal recounts the events that took him to two wars and then to the pulpit.
Also in this edition, Phillip and Carrie Viohl tell of their adventures as restaurateurs. Four years ago they opened The Square in downtown Moultrie, serving “Southern comfort” food inspired by memories of their childhood. Join us as Wayne Grandy visits with the Viohls who pride themselves in “cooking from scratch.” They are proud to note that there is no microwave in their restaurant.
And it’s that time of year again when our community gets ready for the Calico Arts and Crafts Show, scheduled for Nov. 11-12. This long-standing show is a shopping extravaganza featuring the latest trends in arts and crafts.
In this edition of Moultrie Scene, you can learn more about what will be featured in this year’s show.
These are samples of the many interesting and enterprising people who help make our community a great place to live and raise our children.
