LIVE OAK, Fla. — The annual Raid on the Suwannee Civil War reenactment and living history event will not be held this year.

Event coordinator Bo Hancock said due to his health, he could not run the event this year.

“We’ve been looking for someone that would take over,” Hancock said. “We couldn’t find someone that was interested.”

The Raid on the Suwannee is not an actual battle. The reenactment is what might have happened if the union forces broke through the confederate defenses at Olustee, just before Lake City. The union would have followed the railroad to the Suwannee River to destroy the railroad bridge leading to Tallahassee.

Hancock said Heritage Parks and Gardens decided to cancel Raid on the Suwannee this year in hopes of finding someone to coordinate it next year.

“It was a good event, I just couldn’t do it anymore,” Hancock said.

Hancock added that if someone wanted to coordinate it, he would help them.

“It takes a lot to put it together,” Hancock said.
