Pediatric Dental Center celebrates new location

- At the end of a visit, kids are given a key to the prize wall.
TIFTON — Walking into Pediatric Dental Center for the first time, it’s easy to mistake it for a playground.
Above the seats kids lay down in for dental cleanings, cartoon clouds and hot air balloons hang down.
Off to the side is an expansive, multi-level playground.
In the back, there’s a small section for watching television and playing video games.
It’s enough to make a kid forget they’re going to the dentist.
“We handle dental ends, but we handle behavioral needs as well. Kids have anxiety,” said Dr. Luke Webster at a recent open house. “A lot of kids have had medical processes that have scared them. A lot of kids have had dental procedures that have scared them. A lot of kids have never had anything and they’re scared of the idea of going somewhere. So we mix dental needs and preventive needs with the right environment and specialist care that we provide.”
The new location, at 820 Love Avenue, was a sizable upgrade for Pediatric Dental Center, moving from a 2,000 square feet office to a 8,500 square feet building that once housed a Coca-Cola bottling plant.
“It was a long process,” said Webster. “We stated negotiating the business the first part of 2015. Then it was a year and a half of design work before we finally started construction. It looks us six to eight months to finish the construction.”
For more involved procedures—fillings, crowns, etc—there are quieter rooms further back.
Also towards the back is a selection of dental care products.
“We can guide them [parents], for people that have braces or kids with special needs that need special toothbrushes,” said Dr. Aksana Marshall, a dual-trained pediatric dentist and orthodontist. “And mouthpieces, mouth guards for kids that play sports.”
That section is right next to the treasure wall in the back, where kids can open locked doors for prizes at the end of a visit.
“It’s fun for us,” said Webster. “I told Dr. Marshall I haven’t had this much practicing in, like, ever. It’s a blast. It’s like coming to Disney World every day.”
