MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County High School and C.A. Gray Junior High School drama departments invite the community to the Withers Auditorium at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, and Tuesday, Oct. 17, for the one-act production of “The Lottery” by Brainard Duffield, adapted from the short story by Shirley Jackson.
Tickets will be available at the door: Adults $5, students $2.
Since its original publication in The New Yorker in 1948, Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” has baffled, outraged, and intrigued readers. In the story, the villagers gather for an annual ritual, a lottery. What appears to be a beautiful and exciting day soon turns ominous as members of the town question the tradition (and the consequences) of the lottery.
The cast and crew will take their production on the road Oct. 25 to compete against other high schools in the region, each school performing a 55-minute one-act play. The GHSA Region 1-7A One Act Play competition will be held at Tift County Performing Arts Center in Tifton.
