THOMASVILLE — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night.
Thomas County Sheriff’s Office requested investigation of the fatal shooting, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the GBI. The name of the man shot has not been released.
Thomas County 911 dispatch received a report of a man walking down County Line Road, brandishing a gun. Deputies responded and made contact with the male, “who was talking irrationally and carrying a pistol,” the GBI said.
Attempts by law enforcement to calm the situation were unsuccessful as the man was unresponsive and kept possession of the gun.
Repeated attempts were made to de-escalate the situation, based on witnesses interviewed.
The Thomasville/Thomas County SWAT team was dispatched to the scene, also attempting to communicate with the subject.
A non-lethal flexible baton round was deployed but unsuccessful. The subject then pointed his gun toward SWAT officers and was shot by an officer providing cover, according to the GBI. The name of the officer who fired has not been released.
An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI crime lab in Macon.
Once the GBI’s investigation is finished, the case will be turned over to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
No further information has been released by the GBI.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Thomasville GBI office at (229) 225-4090.
