GBI investigates officer-involved shooting in Thomasville

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect Wednesday night by a member of the Thomasville-Thomas County SWAT team.

According to the GBI, Thomas County 911 received a report of a man walking along County Line Road with a gun. Sheriff’s deputies responded and made contact with the man, who was said to be carrying a pistol and talking irrationally.

Officers attempted to calm the situation but the man did not respond and continued to hold the weapon. The SWAT team was called and attempted to talk with the  man. SWAT team officers deployed a bean bag round but it was unsuccessful. The main pointed the pistol toward officers and an office providing cover during the incident fatally shot the subject, according to the GBI.

Identification of the suspect will be released after the next of kin is notified. An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Macon.

The investigation is still active. When completed it will be turned over to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.  Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI office in Thomasville at (229) 225-4090.
