TIFTON — The largest Hispanic festival in South Georgia, La Fiesta del Pueblo, celebrated 21 years of bringing a taste of Latin America to South Georgia on Sept. 30 in Fulwood Park.
There were vendors selling everything from hand carved wooden ornaments to jewelry, and several booths sold items with the flags of individual countries like Nicaragua, Mexico and Columbia.
There were food vendors, both local and from around the region, selling traditional foods and snacks. Festival-goers could get tacos and burritos, but also pupusas, a Salvadorian dish made of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and meat; duros, a snack that looks like wagon wheels made of puffed wheat flavored with chili and lime; and mangonada, a drink made with mangos, lime juice and chili powder.
The children’s area was always busy, with bouncing houses, giant slides and kiddie train rides.
The two stages provided non-stop entertainment, including Mariachi Espuelas de América, dancers and local performers.
This year La Fiesta del Pueblo was held in honor of the late Luz Marti who passed away this year. Marti was one of the main founders of this festival and dedicated almost 20 years to making this event a reality.
In 2016, La Fiesta attracted around 12,500 people from 38 counties in Georgia and six surrounding states.
