Colquitt County Farm Bureau receives district awards

- Colquitt County Farm Bureau received four awards at the Georgia Farm Bureau 9th District meeting. MACON, Ga. – Colquitt County Farm Bureau was recognized for its outstanding member programs during the Georgia Farm Bureau 9th District annual meeting held Sept. 21 in Camilla. Stanley Bass is the CCFB president.
The CCFB Young Farmer Committee, chaired by Preston Jimmerson, received the 2017 9th District Outstanding Young Farmer Program Award.
The Young Farmer Committee consists of farmers between ages 18 and 35. One of the committee’s key activities in the past year was sponsoring a luncheon for graduating FFA and 4-H students.
The CCFB Women’s Leadership Committee, chaired by Greta Collins, received the GFB 9th District Outstanding Women’s Leadership Committee Award. The committee’s activities included work on the annual Fourth Grade Agriculture Awareness event, which exposed 753 students to aspects of Colquitt County agriculture.
The CCFB Promotion & Education Committee, chaired by Nancy Coleman, received the GFB 9th District Outstanding Promotion & Education Award. The committee’s activities included an exhibit at the National Diving Meet in August. Approximately 300 visitors from nine other states and China were given peanuts, shown the stages of cotton growth and received take-home items.
CCFB members Elton and Tabitha Baldy received the 9th District Young Farmer Achievement Award, which recognizes young farmers who earn the majority of their income from production agriculture. The Baldys were finalists for the state award. Elton grows peanuts and cotton along with a variety of vegetable crops on 2,000 acres. He also has a retail store at the state farmers market in Moultrie, where he sells produce directly to the public from a space at the Moultrie state farmers market. He is also a licensed auctioneer.
Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s largest general farm organization and has 158 county offices. Its volunteer members actively participate in local, state and national activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. GFB offers its members a wide variety of benefits, including insurance, but enrollment in member benefits is optional and not a requirement for membership.
