VALDOSTA — South Georgia Medical Center experienced no problems operating in emergency mode as Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irma passed through the region, the hospital’s CEO said Monday.
There were only 17 hospital admissions Friday through Sunday, and not all of those were through the emergency department, said Ross Berry, CEO of SGMC.
“There have been no injuries (treated at SGMC) related to the storm,” he said.
The hospital staffed all departments that needed to operate, Berry said.
“We made overnight accommodations for 267 employees at all four campuses (Valdosta main, Valdosta-North Valdosta Road facility, Berrien and Lanier counties),” he said. “We had an additional 14 physicians who came and stayed through the night.”
SGMC has about 190 patients in total right now, Berry said.
There were two emergency surgeries and 16 births at the hospital Friday through Sunday, he said. The surgeries were “not necessarily storm-related,” Berry said.
SGMC’s main Valdosta campus and the Berrien facility remain on their regular power sources, while the Lanier and Valdosta-North Valdosta Road facilities are on backup power, Berry said.
The Youth Care center at SGMC’s main campus, usually open until 9 p.m. Mondays, will be closed Monday evening, he said.
No deadline has been set for closing SGMC’s incident command center, Berry said.
He praised the professionalism of the hospital’s staff and urged anyone with a medical emergency to call 911 rather than try to drive to the hospital.
