MOULTRIE, Ga. — Emergency officials announced a county-wide curfew starting tonight and extending until Tuesday morning in response to Hurricane Irma.
The hurricane, which is making landfall this afternoon in southern Florida, is expected to enter the Colquitt County area around 7 a.m. Monday with sustained winds up to 58 miles per hour. Officials said they cannot rule out 80-mile-an-hour winds around noon.
The storm is expected to impact the area until Monday evening with rainfall of 6-10 inches. Officials said creeks are low right now, so they don’t expect flooding to be a problem.
Officials said 10 shelters are open and will be for 24-48 hours: Southwest Gym, Meredith Gym, the Ryce Center, the Northwest Youth Center, Heritage Church, Kingwood Baptist Church, Emmanuel Praise Church in Ellenton, Ellenton City Hall, the Moultrie Police Department, and Pine Grove Baptist Church off Bay-Rockyford Road.
These shelters are not Red Cross-staffed facilities. They don’t have food, cots or other amenities, so you’ll need to bring what you expect to need with you.
The American Red Cross has opened shelters in Albany, Tifton and Cordele that have been previously announced.
