THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division is looking to recruit a few good agents.
Hiring additional agents was discussed at Wednesday’s drug commission meeting, and Louis Schofill, narcotics/vice division commander, said the drug squad will hire two agents.
A total of eight candidates — seven from the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office and one from Thomasville City Police — applied.
“We got some really good candidates,” Schofill said.
The selected candidates will be presented to Thomas County Sheriff Carlton Powell and projected to be hired as early as Friday.
Schofill added once hired, the new agents will undergo training.
The commander also said getting agents into certain narcotics-specific training courses can be difficult and pointed to the logistics of pulling the selected agents from their current positions.
Schofill said the hiring process is aimed to “get the right candidates that will be good for the unit and the community.”
With the addition of two agents, the drug squad will consist of seven agents, including Schofill.
Thomas County Commissioner Wiley Grady, a drug commission member, asked if a seven-member drug squad was sufficient.
“I think it’s sufficient right now,” Powell said.
In other business, the drug panel also discussed the squad’s “productive month,” according to Schofill.
Thomasville City Council member Terry Scott, also a drug commission member, noted the importance of involvement in the community.
The drug panel also discussed the importance of reporting information to law enforcement.
“We encourage everyone to call,” Schofill said, adding calls are anonymous.
“We’re out there and we’ll respond to it,” the commander added.
