VALDOSTA — Some Florida evacuees seeking South Georgia as a safe haven may not find shelter for their pets.

One area pet-boarding facility has found evacuees turning to it.

Gogi’s Great Escape Animal Boarding, 6717 Franklinville Road, is an option for keeping furry family members safe, according to its owner.

“We are offering half-price boarding to storm victims and each room has its own outdoor courtyard but spaces are filling up,” Gogi Hinman, owner, said Thursday.

Some evacuees are arriving with the wrong assumption their pets are welcome at all hotels and shelters, according to Lowndes County officials.

Currently information is circulating related to the Pets Evacuation and Standards Act of 2006. The law amends the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act; however, the act does not require public shelters or hotels to accept pets during a disaster, according to Valdosta and Lowndes County officials Thursday.

“As our community moves through responding to the possible arrival of Hurricane Irma, remember we are all dependent upon timely and accurate information,” said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County clerk and public information officer.

Officials are asking people to take a moment to verify information shared on social media as accurate.

“In the event it becomes necessary to open public shelters in Lowndes County, there will be some pet-friendly shelter space available. However, not all shelter space can accommodate pets,” Dukes said.

Dukes urged pet owners to make plans now for their animals.
