Bank helps Colquitt County volunteer firefighters

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Southwest Georgia Bank and Southwest Georgia Insurance Services recently held a seafood dinner and insurance coverage meeting for the Colquitt County Volunteer Firefighters Association. The bank gave a $250 donation to each volunteer fire station in Colquitt County. 

 

Hospital hosts Men’s Health Challenge

DALTON, Ga. — Screenings, sports and fitness challenges, and prizes are part of Hamilton Medical Center’s Men’s Health Challenge from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Bradley Wellness Center (BWC). The event is free. The screenings — worth more than $500 — will include cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, PSA, vision, balance, pain/injury, body mass index, spine, colorectal cancer and blood pressure. Also, Dr. Charles Idom Jr., Dr. Joseph Veys and Dr. Eduardo Rojas will provide a prostate presentation at 9 a.m. in the BWC classroom. Prostate exams (recommended for men over 40) will be provided. Screening participation is limited. The first 300 pre-registered participants will receive a free stainless steel tumbler. All participants may enter to win a flat screen TV, gas grill or Fit Bit. If you need assistance with interpretation services and/or auxiliary aids, please indicate when registering. MPD officers become Valor for Blue instructors

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. Officials with the Milledgeville Police Department  has announced instructor accomplishments of Officer Eugene McKinney and Det. Scott Goodwin. McKinney and Goodwin are among five officers in the state of Georgia who are Valor for Blue instructors.vThe VALOR Program was established in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), as a response to growing trends in violence against law enforcement officers. VALOR Training is designed for law enforcement to promote officer safety and to help prevent injuries and deaths of law enforcement officers and the people they serve.  MPD’s instructors are among the five officials in the state who have the qualifications to access all training material the Valor for Blue program offers. McKinney and Goodwin plan to make use of this instructor opportunity by training others at the police department.   “On behalf of everyone here at the Milledgeville Police Department, I want to congratulate Officer McKinney and Detective Goodwin on their achievement. I am very proud of the outstanding work of these officers,” said Police Chief Dray Swicord. 

 

End of Summer student event set for Saturday

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Kick off the end of summer with free food, music and fun this weekend. Live Oak, Jasper and Lake City 8th-12th grade students are invited to attend the first Frederick (Douglas) Augustus Washington Bailey End of Summer Slam Jam on Saturday.  The Slam Jam will be held from 6-10 p.m. at Corporal Gary Edwards Gymnasium, 9th Street SW, Live Oak.  Admission is free. There will be free food, gift bags, a rap, dance and singing contest and DJ Money Mark will perform. The sponsors for event is AHF and Y.V.S. LHS Off-Broadway ready for season

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Lowndes High School Off-Broadway is preparing to be on stage again this season. The student theatre troupe has several shows scheduled for the 2017-18 season, said Lawson Cribb, LHS Off-Broadway publicity manager. The season opens with “Chamber Music.” “This is our show that we are performing at the Georgia Theatre Conference in Carollton, Ga.,” Cribb said. The show is scheduled to play for public performances 7 p.m., Sept. 28-30.  “Anything Goes.” A 55-minute adaptation of the famed Cole Porter musical. It is scheduled to be the LHS entry for the Georgia High School Association one-act play competition. Public performance dates are scheduled for 7 p.m., Oct. 26-28. “A Christmas Carol.” The beloved Charles Dickens Christmas tale is scheduled as the intermediate drama class play. Run dates: 7 p.m., Dec. 8, 9.  “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” A musical adaptation of Baroness Orczy’s novel of a masked man set during the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. “This is our competition musical for the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Shuler Awards),” Cribb said. Run dates: 7 p.m., Jan. 18-20, 25-27. “Much Ado About Nothing.” The comedy is the annual production of a William Shakespeare play. Run dates: 7 p.m., March 22-24. “Senior Showcase.” End-of-the-year show featuring graduating seniors. Run date: 7 p.m., May 11. All shows are scheduled to run in the auditorium of Lowndes High School off of Norman Drive.

 

Museum of Arts and Heritage to host “The Paws on Love”

TIFTON, Ga. — An international art exhibit celebrating dogs will open with a reception at the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage 2-4 p.m., Sunday Sept. 10. “The Paws on Love” exhibit has drawn artists from Brazille, Australia and Canada, in addition to others from throughout the Southeast, according to a press release. The show’s chairperson, Jeannie Rigdon, said that artistic styles and mediums range from fine to funky, reflecting how artists view the dog in paintings, photographs, sculpture, wood, ceramics, wire and mixed media. She also said some of the art will be for sale, while some is on loan from local collectors. A family friendly event, admission to the show is free.  If attendees bring a new bag of dog food or kitty litter, they may post an unframed small photo (no larger than 5X7) of their own dog in a special section of the Exhibit. All donations of litter or food will be given to the Tifton Humane Society, the release states.The exhibit will continue through Sept. 29, Tuesdays-Fridays 1-5 p.m.; Thursdays 1-7 p.m. and Sundays, 1-3 p.m. The museum is located at 255 Love Avenue in downtown Tifton.
