DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton man has been charged with cruelty to an animal after a witness reported a dog hanging by a leash from a fence near Harmon Field Sunday afternoon.

Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said the call came in shortly before 12:20 p.m. Frazier said a witness reported seeing a man later identified as Corey Yarbrough, 27, 3340 S. Riverbend Road, walking a pit bull on a leash near Harmon Field. A very short time later, the witness said she saw him again without the dog. She told officers she walked back towards Harmon Field and found the dog hanging by a leash from a fence near the intersection of Cappes Street and Vernon Avenue.

She said she got the dog down and called 911. The officers who responded to the call arrested Yarbrough and took the dog to the Whitfield County animal shelter. Frazier said the dog “was not harmed and was walking around at the scene.”

“At this time it is unclear why the dog was left hanging from the fence,” Frazier said.

Yarbrough was released from the Whitfield County jail Sunday on a $2,000 bond.
