Hornets run wild against Warriors in opener

MAYO, Fla. — What a difference a week makes.

One week after struggling to run the ball or stop the run in the Kickoff Classic, Lafayette High School had no problems in either area, running wild against Brookwood (Ga.) 33-10 in its season opener Friday at Dale Walker Field.

The Hornets rushed for 373 yards and held the Warriors to just 47 yards rushing as they pulled away in the second half. Lafayette scored 33 straight points after falling behind 3-0 midway through the second quarter before Brookwood scored in the game’s final minute.

“We knew that was one thing we were going to have to commit to this week was try to be able to run the ball and keep it moving,” Lafayette coach Joey Pearson said.

Most of that damage came on the ground with sophomore quarterback Jaxson Beach and junior running back Garris Edwards leading the way. Beach rushed for a game-high 189 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries while also throwing for one score. Edwards churned out 136 on 21 totes, including a 26-yard score with 8:16 left that put Lafayette up 33-3.

“We run the same stuff they do, they just executed it better,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “And that’s why they’re up 33-3.”

That final Lafayette touchdown came less than a minute after Kendall Calhoun stuffed Brookwood running back Vincent Yokley for a loss in the end zone for a safety to give the Hornets a 27-3 advantage.

Yokley, who had cleared 100 yards rushing in each of the Warriors’ first two games, was limited to just 28 yards on 20 carries. As a team, Brookwood managed 47 yards rushing on 34 carries.

In the Kickoff Classic, Dixie County churned out 245 yards in three quarters against Lafayette’s varsity defense.

“Defensively, I thought a lot of guys made plays,” Pearson said. “We were very solid against that no-huddle.”

That stingy run defense also came up big late in the third quarter. After a muffed punt gave Brookwood the ball in Hornet territory, the Warriors quickly moved to the LHS 3. However, in four tries from there, the Warriors were unable to penetrate the Lafayette defense with Yokley losing two yards on fourth down from the 1.

“When you have first-and-goal, you’ve got to score,” Boggs said. “We didn’t get the job done.”

UP NEXT: The Hornets will welcome Bronson to Dale Walker Field at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.

The Eagles will be making their season debut after going 1-8 a year ago including a 48-12 home loss to Lafayette.
