MOULTRIE – Lowndes and Tift County rolled to lopsided weather-shortened wins on Friday to keep their records untarnished, but on the coast, Camden County was struck down for the second year by the team from Venice, Fla.
Together with Colquitt County’s 26-7 home victory over California’s Vista Murrieta, Region 1-7A went 3-1 on Friday.
Lowndes, Tift County and Colquitt County combined to allow just 14 points.
Camden got its first season under new head coach Bob Sphire off on the right foot, winning its opener 19-6 over Oakleaf (Fla.) High.
But the Wildcats trailed 21-3 at the half against Venice, gave up two more scores in the third quarter and fell 35-3 in front of the home fans at Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland.
Venice, coming off a 12-1 season in 2016, is ranked No. 7 in Florida.
Camden will be home for a third straight week next Friday when the 1-1 Wildcats play host to 1-1 Fitzgerald.
Farther west, Tift County and Lowndes each had to deal with lightning.
The Blue Devils’ 31-7 victory over Cook was called with 6:13 left in the third quarter when lightning was spotted in the area. It was the second weather delay of the game.
Before the game was cut short, Tift County’s Griffin Collier became the school’s all-time leading passer and Rashod Bateman scored three touchdowns.
A 17-yard completion to Otis Jackson in the second quarter gave Collier 4,362 yards for his career, surpassing Worth Bowers’ mark of 4,347, set in 1997.
Collier finished the short night by completing 6-of-10 passes for 125 yards. Bateman caught four passes for 70 yards and three touchdowns.
Cook scored on an 81-yard touchdown run by Jakeem Carson.
Tift will return to Brodie Field on Friday to play host to 1-1 Glynn Academy.
Lowndes was expected to have little trouble with the International School of Broward County (Fla.), which fell to Colquitt County last year 56-24.
The No. 4-ranked Vikings had a couple of turnovers, but otherwise had their way with the Pumas, winning 56-0 in a game ended in the third quarter by lightning.
Lowndes returned four interceptions for touchdowns, took a punt back for a score and added two safeties.
The Vikings held ISB to minus-40 yards of offense.
Lowndes has now outscored its first two opponents by a combined 101-0, but competition is expected to become a bit more troublesome next Friday when Parkview visits Martin Stadium.
The Panthers are also 2-0 and have put up some impressive numbers, defeating Peachtree Ridge 50-13 and Shiloh 69-0.
Lowndes won 35-34 in the Big Orange Jungle at Parkview last season, holding off a late rally by the Panthers, who scored three times in the fourth quarter.
Elsewhere in games of interest, how about Thomasville’s 41-7 victory over Thomas County Central?
In the first two games in his second season leading the Bulldogs’ program, Zach Grage has led his team to wins over Cairo, by a 38-7 score in Week 1, and Thomas County Central.
And, according to the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, the Friday night victory was No. 700 for the Thomasville program.
It also evened the record between the two schools at 25-25.
The Bulldogs will try to go to 3-0 next Friday when they play host to Monroe at Veterans Stadium.
Also, Brookwood drops to 0-2 after falling 42-35 to Walton; Valdosta played one half and a kickoff of the third quarter before lightning ended its 26-0 win over Woodland of Stockbridge; North Forsyth won over Johns Creek 28-6; Archer defeated Peachtree Ridge 52-7; and White County went to 2-0 under former Colquitt County head coach Tim Cokely with a 66-14 victory over Lumpkin County.
Bishop Sullivan of Chesapeake, Va., which will be Colquitt County’s Homecoming opponent on Sept. 30, opened its season on Saturday night at home against American Heritage of Plantation, Fla.
