- Workmen from Georgia Florida Railway will remove railroad tracks where they cross 26th Avenue Southeast, and City of Moultrie workers will smooth out the roadway afterwards. Work is set to begin on Monday.
MOULTRIE, Ga. — An unused railroad track on 26th Avenue Southeast has a “hump” that makes drivers feel they’ve gone airborne like the car in the “Dukes of Hazzard.”
On Monday, workers will put a stop to that better than Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.
The Georgia Florida Railway, managed by Trax, will start removing railroad tracks on 26th Avenue next to the YMCA beginning Monday. Moultrie’s Public Works and Engineering departments will work to lower the “hump” once the railroad tracks are removed.
The area will be closed to traffic for two days, a city spokeswoman said. Citizens needing to access businesses and residents east of the railroad tracks can travel from Veterans Parkway, and those going west of the tracks can get there from Main Street or Fifth Street Southeast.
The city recently released a list of railroad crossings to be removed or repaired over the next 15-20 months, although the list didn’t include an order of priority or a timeline for the work.
Repairs are planned on tracks where they cross Second Avenue Northeast and First Avenue Northeast.
The track crossing East Central Avenue may be removed or repaired, depending on a decision by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Crossings to be removed include:
• Second Avenue Southeast.
• Fifth Avenue Southeast.
• Sixth Avenue Southeast.
• Ninth Avenue Southeast.
• Hillcrest Avenue.
• 12th Avenue Southeast.
• 15th Avenue Southeast.
• 26th Avenue Southeast.
