THOMASVILLE — A social media post of a man holding an assault rifle resulted in several dozen calls to law enforcement and the arrest of the individual in the photograph.
The suspect, Kutter Harrison, 20, Ozell Road, Boston, surrendered at the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office at 3 p.m. Thursday after being contacted by an investigator. He is charged with terroristic threats.
“The post went viral almost immediately after it went up,” said Capt. Steven Jones, sheriff’s office public information officer.
The photo also showed a handgun tucked in the suspect’s pants waistband.
The post went up at 12:50 p.m. Calls to the sheriff’s office began immediately.
“We cannot allow anyone to do or say anything to incite violence or fear like this,” Jones said, adding that other threatening posts will be tracked by sheriff’s office investigators.
The officer said a message with the post insinuated racial violence in the community Friday.
“We are not anticipating anything of that nature. This is why we are tracking down these idle threats that are scaring people,” Jones said. “The criminal investigation division is working almost around the clock to identify those making threats and show there is no credibility to the threats.”
Investigators are not the only people monitoring such posts. So is the public.
“Some are being brought to our attention before we see them,” Jones said.
