Police name suspect in robberies

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Tennessee man accused of assaulting package store employees with chemical spray in two July 29 holdups is being sought by Moultrie police.

Police identified Karon Caldwell as the suspect in the attempted robbery of Somesh Package and the robbery of Andy’s Package which were hit within a period of about two hours on the same Saturday morning.

Warrants were taken on Wednesday charging Caldwell with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and armed robbery,

At about 10 a.m., a man dressed in a dark-colored T-shirt, dark pants and shoes and a ball camp entered Somesh Package, located at 205 Fifth St. S.E. The man made a small purchase and then turned pepper spray on 56-year-old Mike Patel.

The would-be robber did not make off with any cash in that attack.

At about noon, the same scenario played out at the second store at 23 Lower Meigs Road.

Police said that the same person made a small purchase and pepper-sprayed Mike Patel, 33, before grabbing the cash from the register.

Neither man was seriously injured.
