DOERUN, Ga. — Residents of the City of Doerun will vote Nov. 7 to fill the unexpired term of Mayor George Saunders, who died June 20.

Candidates seeking that post will qualify between Aug. 21 and 25 at the office of the city clerk at Doerun City Hall, 223 W. Broad St. Qualifying will be held between 9 a.m. and noon and between 1 and 4:30 p.m. each day, according to advertisements placed with The Moultrie Observer.

The qualifying fee for mayor is $81 and must be paid at the time of qualifying.

Saunders was first elected in 2012 and was re-elected last year. His term will expire at the end of 2020.

City Clerk Merisha Carelock said the mayor pro tem, City Councilman Mike Campbell, has been in charge of meetings in Saunders’ absence. She said Campbell has announced plans to vacate his city council seat to run for mayor. If he follows through on those plans, city council will set a separate qualifying period and the election for his seat will take place Nov. 7 alongside the election for mayor.

While only one race in Doerun will hold qualifying Aug. 21-25, scheduled elections in several other area cities will hold qualifying that week as well.

Moultrie

The City of Moultrie will select three city councilmen on Nov. 7.

Up for election are the seats currently held by Susie Magwood-Thomas (District 1, Post 1), Daniel Dunn (District 2, Post 5) and Wilma Hadley (District 3, Post 6).

Qualifying will be 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, Aug. 21-25 at City Hall, 21 First Ave. N.E.

Qualifying fees are $178.30 for each post, which is 3 percent of a city councilman’s salary.

Funston

Funston will also be voting to fill three city council seats. The posts currently represented by Jerry Smith, Bobby Ruis and Dobson Stripling are up for election.

Qualifying will be 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, through Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Funston City Hall.

Qualifying fees for all positions are set at $1.

Ellenton

In the City of Ellenton, Mayor Audie Perry Sr.’s seat is up for election, as are the council seats currently occupied by Donald Branch and Myrtice Bunn.

Qualifying will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Aug. 21-24, in the office of the city clerk at City Hall.

Qualifying fee for mayor is $11 and for a city council seat is $9.

Berlin

Like in Ellenton, Berlin residents will choose two council members and the mayor when they go to the polls Nov. 7.

Mayor Mark Bridwell’s seat is up for election, as are the council seat held by Tina Bridwell and the council seat formerly held by Curtis Akridge. Akridge’s seat was vacated and is being held by appointee Donna Wilson.

Qualifying will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, Aug. 21 and 23, and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Qualifying fees will be $20 for any of the seats.

TSPLOST

The Nov. 7 election will also feature a referendum on a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Details on the projects that officials propose to pay for with the TSPLOST will be announced soon.

Because the sales tax vote is county-wide, ballots will be cast at the usual county polling places, as well as early voting at the Colquitt County Courthouse Annex.

The municipal elections, however, will generally be held at the town’s city hall, which usually isn’t the county polling place.

Moultrie is potentially more convoluted. Each of the three city races will be held in different places: Post 1 will be held at A.F. Shaw Gym, Post 5 at Tommy Meredith Memorial Gym, and Post 6 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Both of the gyms are county polling places, but some city voters would vote in the city election at one polling place and in the TSPLOST election at another.

Details of municipal early voting procedures will be announced nearer to the time to vote.
