School absences draw criminal charges

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie woman faces charges after her daughter reportedly racked up more than 80 days absent from school during the last school year.
Jennifer Nicole Barnwell, 36, 1085 Funston-Sigsbee Road, was charged Thursday with violation of compulsory school attendance.

A social worker with Willie J. Williams Middle School reported to police that the girl missed 84 days of school during the 2016-2017 school year.
During that time, police said, the social worker met with the girl’s parents “on multiple occasions to discuss her attendance.”
The school provided two letters sent to the parents in October and provided documentation for two parent conferences and multiple phone calls and home visits to the parents from Oct. 17-May 17, police said.

• Pawn Depot, 209 Sixth St. S.E., reported Thursday that a shoplifter stole an Xbox One game system valued at $210 and a DVD player valued at $30.

• John Warner, 400 block U.S. Highway 319 North, reported Thursday the theft of a Blue Stinger stream light flashlight valued at $200.
Fraud
Moultrie Police
• Esther Lashley, 71, Moultrie, reported Thursday that five unauthorized charges were made on her checking account.
Lashley told police that when she had an issue with her debit card while trying to make a purchase she contacted her bank, which told her that a fraud alert had been placed on the account.
The charges were all made locally and totaled about $153, police said.
