Storms chances build
VALDOSTA, Ga. — Thunderstorm chances slackened a bit during the weekend but are expected to rebound to the 60 percent range later in the week, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service’s forecast for Valdosta shows rain chances dipped as low as 10 percent Sunday night. The first of the week, daytime thunderstorm chances were expected to start at 30 percent, said Jeff Fournier, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. The major driver of the weather early in the week is a high-pressure system to the east, said Dan Pydynowski, a senior meteorologist for the private forecasting firm AccuWeather. The weather was being aided by sea breeze circulation from the Gulf of Mexico, Fournier said. Thunderstorms “will be pretty spotty afternoon storms,” Pydynowski said. In the middle of the week, a frontal boundary is expected to move south, stalling north of South Georgia, he said. The boundary will start driving storm chances up to the 50 percent range during the day for the rest of the week, Pydynowski said. “Wednesday through Friday, the storms will be widespread,” he said. Fournier said the region could get “an inch or so” of rain through the week. Pydynowski said communities could get “a quick quarter or half-inch of rain” from isolated storms. Neither forecaster expected much in the way of widespread severe weather. Pydynowski said there was always a chance of flash flooding if any one spot were hit by storms two or three days in a row. Highs are expected to be in the low 90s all week with overnight lows in the low to mid 70s, according to the weather service’s forecast.
