LAKE CITY — Florida Gateway College presented the members of the college’s women’s volleyball team to the public Tuesday in a media day ceremony held at the college.
Taylor Carter, a 2017 SHS graduate, is one of the nine student-athletes helping to restart the program. She is joined by Hanna Baker (Columbia County), Katelyn Blong (Gilchrist County), Lilly Combs, Brittney Manning and Tristyn Sutherland (Union County), Ameah Gerideau (Seminole County), Madison Morrison (Baker County) and Antoinette Ochipa (Volusia County) on the Bobcats’ roster.
Coach Richie Tang introduced the new team members, who will be competing this fall in the inaugural season of the newly revived FGC athletics intercollegiate sports program. Family and friends, along with members of the FGC faculty and staff, attended the event. Speakers included Tang, athletics coordinator Rebecca Golden and FGC president Dr. Lawrence Barrett.
Women’s volleyball was last played at the college nearly 40 years ago, ending in 1978. Women’s volleyball and men’s golf will begin competition this fall, marking the return of athletics to Florida Gateway College after a hiatus of nearly a decade.
Carter, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter/middle blocker, had a .293 hitting percentage as a senior at Suwannee and helped the Bulldogs achieve their first district title since 1992.
