THOMASVILLE — It didn’t take long for Thomasville’s Reggie Perry to find a new place to take his talents after high school.
The Bulldogs’ star basketball player verbally committed to Mississippi State University on Monday, just two weeks after announcing his decision to decommit from Arkansas.
“It was on my list during my early recruitment period,” Perry said. “I felt like it was the best fit for me.”
His decision to reopen his recruitment earlier this month was due to a personal issue, his father’s health. His decision will allow him to be closer to his family.
“It’s close to home,” Perry said. “My parents can come and watch me play any time.”
Perry is certainly familiar with new school he has chosen. His father, Al Perry, made a name for himself in the Mississippi State record books during his time as a player there from 1975-78. He is currently third on the program’s all-time assists list, ending his college career with 510. He had 207 during the 1975-76 season. The younger Perry will now look to continue the family legacy there.
“I have a good relationship with the coaching staff and I feel like they can get me where I need to be in the right amount of time,” Perry said.
Perry, a 6-foot-9 five-star power forward, is ranked as the best player in the state of Georgia and as the No. 15 player in the nation by 247Sports.
By getting the commitment out of the way quickly, Perry can now continue his offseason work distraction-free. He has been staying busy, competing with the Amateur Athletic Union. At the Adidas Gauntlet Finale in South Carolina last week, he averaged 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
