TIFTON, Ga. — Beautiful wood to beautiful art: That’s what happens when members of the Little River Woodturners, a regional craftsmen’s guild, turn a log, a limb, or part of a tree stump into a unique work of art. The Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage will celebrate the skills of these artisans with an exhibit of their works from July 15 – July 30. The public is invited to the opening reception from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 15.  Viewers can enjoy refreshments and watch a live demonstration of the craft during the evening. The exhibition will feature a variety of turned art, including, bowls, vases, Christmas or other decorative items, urns, even fountain pens, all made from a variety of local woods by woodturners from Tifton, Moultrie, Adel, Fitzgerald, Funston, Albany and Valdosta. Many of the objects will be available for purchase. The Little River Woodturners comprise a group of 20-30 artists who come together monthly to share and hone their talents. Inspired by an exhibit and workshop held several years ago at the Museum, local farmer and craftsman James Walker, initiated the group, which has grown from a handful of Tifton hobbyists to the larger group representing several south Georgia communities. The exhibit will be open through July 30, Tuesdays – Fridays 1–5 p.m.; Sunday 1-3 p.m. On Thursday evenings between 5-7 p.m., a live demonstration of woodturning on a lathe will occur. Admission to the exhibit and events is free.  The Museum of Arts and Heritage is located in downtown Tifton at 255 Love Avenue. For information, contact Syd Blackmarr, exhibits chair @229-388-1090 or go to www.tiftonmuseum.org.

‘Physics in Motion’ filming at Wild Adventures

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Wild Adventures Theme Park served as a film set for Georgia Public Broadcasting’s show “Physics in Motion” Thursday. Georgia Public Broadcasting Producer and Valdosta State University alum Shantel Copeland said the show is “an educational series for high school physics students across the state.” Filming was originally scheduled at the park in June but rains pushed filming to July. During the show, which was filmed primarily before the park opened to the public, host Adrian Monte rode various attractions while explaining aspects of motion. “We are thrilled to host Georgia Public Broadcasting,” said Laurie Windham, public relations manager for the park. “Wild Adventures is all about family fun and education. When you can take something fun and learn from it, it makes it that much better.” For Copeland, the decision to come to Wild Adventures was an easy one as the crew wanted to get out of the metro Atlanta area and find a good, controlled environment for the shoot. “Physics in Motion” is set to come out next year, Copeland said.
