Women’s health seminar on July 20 to cover surgical options and diet trends
TIFTON, Ga. — Tift Regional Health System (TRHS) is hosting a free lunch-and-learn seminar on women’s health issues on July 20. The seminar runs noon to 1 p.m., at the Tift Regional Community Events Center. The seminar, a part of the TRHS Rejuvenate Women’s Health Series, will feature two speakers: general surgeon Tracy Nolan, M.D. and registered dietitian Lauren Saxena, RD, LD, CLC. Nolan, a board-certified general surgeon with South Georgia Surgical, will discuss “Women: When is it Time for Surgery?” Saxena, a registered dietitian with TRHS and Affinity Pediatrics, will provide a presentation titled “Food and Diet Trends: What is Fact and What is Fiction?” This event is free and includes a complimentary meal. Anti-dogfighting organization holds informational meeting
DALTON, Ga. — The Anti-Dogfighting Campaign (ADFC) holds an educational community meeting on Aug. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center. Representatives will introduce the organization, discuss its mission and additional sub-organizations (including Project Hope Community Outreach) and how ADFC can help the community. The meeting will also feature speakers from Callie’s Pet Rescue and the National Spay Alliance. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
San Juan hosting VBS from July 17-21
BRANFORD, Fla. — The San Juan Mission is hosting its Vacation Bible School from July 17-21. The program will last from 9 a.m. to noon each day. This year’s VBS theme is “A Radical Ride on the Wings of Prayer,” a program of exploration of the purpose and way to pray. All children, ages 4-12, are invited to join in learning how to pray during an exciting journey across the world with five famous saints. VFW recognizes Gold Star Mother
MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars recognized Betty Terry as a Gold Star Mother during an Independence Day lunch Saturday at the post. Gold Star Mothers are those who have lost a son or daughter in military service. Terry’s son, Cpl. Patrick Wayne Terry, was killed April 23, 1971, when a land mine exploded in Vietnam. She is the only Gold Star Mother the VFW knows about in Colquitt County, but post officials invite anyone who has lost a family member in the military to contact the post at 985-3486.
CGTC health sciences students win national award
MACON, Ga. — Four Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) students enrolled in health sciences programs recently brought home gold in the Health Knowledge Bowl at the 2017 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) and Championships. Taylor Haynes, Bryant Phelps, Alexandra Stephens and Megan Keene earned the medals at NLSC held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville June 22. Also in attendance were William Purvis and Hollie Koon. Purvis, gold medalist for the state of Georgia, also competed in the technical drafting competition and Koon served as an alternate for the health knowledge bowl team. All winners receive medallions, and frequently receive tools of their trade and/or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Championships is for high school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA. More than 6,000 students from every state and two territories competed in 100 contests in technical, skilled, and service occupation, including health occupation this year. To qualify for the national competition, the students competed in local and state contests. The state gold medal winners advanced to the national SkillsUSA Championships.
Police seek recruits
VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Police Department will host an entrance exam for the position of police officer this week. Saturday, July 8, doors will open at the City Hall Annex at 8:30 a.m. and will be locked at 9 a.m. with no further entry, Valdosta Police Lt. Adam Bembry said. Those taking the test are asked to bring identification and $15 cash. The test serves as the first stage of the hiring process for officers and is mandatory. Applications, if not filled out prior to the exam, can be filled out that day. If a person cannot make the test, an application will be placed on file for six months and the individual will be invited to future testing dates within that period, if there are any, Bembry said.
