Recreation board to hold first meeting Wednesday

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie-Colquitt County Recreation Authority will hold its inaugural meeting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the Ryce Community Center on Seventh Street Northwest.

The authority will also hold an informational session at 8:30 p.m. the following day with a presentation from Larry Hanson, city manager of Valdosta. Hanson has helped Moultrie and Colquitt County establish a unified Recreation Authority after Valdosta and Lowndes County went through a similar process.

Both meetings are open to the public.

The authority is composed of seven members — three selected by the Moultrie City Council, three by the Colquitt County Commission, and one that alternates between the two. The chairman will be chosen by the authority itself from among the three delegates from the government that does not choose the alternating delegate, and the vice chairman will be chosen from among the four delegates nominated by the other government.

Since the county has chosen the alternating delegate, the chairman will be chosen — presumably on Wednesday — from among the three city delegates and the vice chairman from among the four county delegates.

City delegates include:

• Angela Castellow, a Moultrie City Council member and executive director of the United Way of Colquitt County. Her term will expire Dec. 31, 2018.

• Dr. Cheau Williams, a urogynecologist associated with Colquitt Regional Medical Center. His term will expire at the end of 2019.

• Dorothy K. McCranie, an attorney with the Kirbo Law Firm. Her term will expire at the end of 2020.

County delegates include:

• Chris Hunnicutt, a Colquitt County commissioner and farmer. His term will expire Dec. 31, 2018.

• Heath Wetherington, a farmer. His term will expire at the end of 2019.

• Brad Gregory, an assistant superintendent with the Colquitt County School System. His term will expire at the end of 2020.

• Bob Swadel, retired director of the Moultrie YMCA. Swadel is the alternating delegate; when his term ends at the end of 2018, the Moultrie City Council will choose his replacement.

All delegates, including the alternating delegate, can be chosen to succeed themselves.
