MOULTRIE, Ga. — The John Benning Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will host the annual Independence Day Observance at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 30, at the amphitheater at the Colquitt County Courthouse. The event will feature the next generation of patriots.
“DAR has three objectives: patriotism, American history and education,” said Nancy Coleman, regent of the John Benning Chapter. “We want to use this event to give young people the opportunity to share their patriotism.”
Evelyn Fagan, valedictorian of the Colquitt County High School Class of 2017, will open the ceremony with a prayer for the nation and the Pledge of Allegiance. The national anthem and other patriotic music will be led by the Colquitt County Arts Center Show Choir under the direction of Beth Miller.
Georgia FFA State Vice President and Colquitt County FFA member Tyler Robinson will share his thoughts on patriotism from a young person’s perspective. Will Barber, 2017 recipient of the DAR American History Award and Scholarship, will lead the audience in reciting The American’s Creed. Veterans will be recognized during the service.
U. S. flags donated by Woodmen Life Chapter 104 will be distributed by children and grandchildren of DAR members.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at the VFW Post on Fifth Avenue Southeast. The DAR urges all citizens to attend the event, joining together to honor our nation’s 241st birthday.
DAR is a volunteer women’s service organization that honors and preserves the legacy of our patriot ancestors. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
