Budget talks start for city schools

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville City School Board is beginning budget talks for the school district’s upcoming fiscal year.

The city school board unanimously adopted a tentative budget on Tuesday.

Noted budgetary figures include a 2 percent salary increase for all employees.

Big ticket expenditures include $150,000 for a new school bus and two vehicles and a $10,000 replacement furniture purchase for Scott Elementary. The school bus purchase — an estimated $115,000 — is to replace a 1998 school bus damaged in a fire.

Total estimated revenues are $25.1 million and total estimated expenditures are $25.7 million.

Associate Superintendent Dr. Laine Reichert said per Georgia law, the school board has to conduct two public hearings regarding the budget before final approval.

Public hearing dates have not be scheduled.

The school board also approved a spending resolution and the financial report for May. The city school system is slightly over 91 percent into the current fiscal year.

Reichert also gave an update on the use of curriculum pacing guides for the elementary schools and middle school and common benchmark assessments for all grade levels.

In other business, the city school board:

• heard an update from three students in Farran Burnette’s peer leadership course on the course’s first year.

• approved final approval on purchasing policy of superintendent and designee authorized to approve any budgeted purchases under $15,000.

• approval of diploma petition list.

• approved personnel recommendations following closed session.

• approved transfer over managing all city schools financial accounts to Reichert and Dr. Daniel Oldham as a signee for all city schools financial reports.

• heard an update on the Georgia School Board Association assembly from delegate attendees Dr. Hazel Jones and Dr. Mary Williams-Scruggs.
